The Access Fund within the Beyond Music campaign provides opportunities for gifted young musicians to be part of The Purcell School, receive world-class training on industry standard instruments, engage in chamber music sessions and step onto the concert stages of the most prestigious venues in the UK.
The mission of the School is that any young person offered a place should be able to benefit from this opportunity, irrespective of their family's financial circumstances. The School offers means-tested bursaries to ensure that those in need of financial support are able to attend. However, whilst the School is fortunate in receiving a certain level of support, demand for bursary funding is such that, each year, the School is forced to turn away around a quarter of those who apply due to lack of available funds.
Only 14% of our families are able to pay full school fees. Many of our families are facing sudden financial hardship. A decline in living standards, job redundancies and reduced social mobility due to the cost of living crisis and Covid-19 pandemic have all resulted in additional need for bursary funds. The School has previously used a proportion of its own reserves to enable these talented students to study here via means-tested bursaries; this is unfortunately no longer possible, and those talented students can only be admitted with funds generously donated by our supporters.
Currently, students at The Purcell School receive up to three hours one-to-one musical tuition, in addition to ensemble coaching, chamber music sessions and academic music classes. We are proud to offer this level of tuition which we believe to be necessary to meet the need of our exceptional musicians. To continue offering this high level of tuition, we are reliant on additional funding from philanthropic sources.
